Arizona agency fines cigarette sellers for cheating public

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Weights and Measures has fined nearly two dozen stores for burning customers on the price of tobacco products.

Sellers were hit with $8,400 in fines. Discrepancies were discovered in shelf pricing and cash-register scanning.

"People just don't know what it is they're actually paying for anymore," said Shawn Marquez, a department spokesman. "You get three packs for half price but you have to buy two at ... wow, it's confusing and a little bit misleading."

Marquez said some of the stores reprimanded didn't even post prices on some items.

Forty-four businesses were audited, including convenience stores, smoke shops and truck stops.
