Suspended surgeon files $18.9M claim against UA

TUCSON, Ariz. — The suspended surgeon credited with expanding the University of Arizona's surgery department has filed a multimillion claim against the school.

The Arizona Daily Star reported that Dr. Rainer Gruessner filed an $18.9 million notice of claim March 14 against the UA College of Medicine and the Arizona Board of Regents.

A claim is a precursor to a lawsuit.

An Arizona Board of Regents spokeswoman and a spokesman for the university declined comment Wednesday.

Attorney Kraig J. Marton said Gruessner wants compensation for the damage to his reputation caused by his suspension as well as loss of potential future earnings.

According to the document, Gruessner will drop the claim if he is reinstated.

He also filed a separate whistle-blower complaint Jan. 9 against the university.
