Pollution advisory issued for Phoenix

PHOENIX -- Strong winds that are expected to stir up dust have prompted environmental regulators to issue a high pollution advisory for fine particulate matter Wednesday in metro Phoenix.

The poor air quality also has led regulators to bar people in Maricopa County from starting wood-burning fires on Wednesday.

Regulators said people with respiratory problems should avoid outdoor activities.

Other recommended steps included avoiding the use of leaf blowers and off-highway vehicles.

High pollution advisories are issued when particulate matter levels are expected to exceed federal health standards for air quality.
