PHOENIX — Phoenix police have identified a man fatally shot when he allegedly tried to assault an officer.

Police spokesman Steve Martos said 25-year-old Willie Harden was killed Sunday morning.

According to the state Department of Corrections' website, a person of that name and age served a prison term on a Maricopa County Superior Court conviction for armed robbery. That man was released Sept. 4.

Martos said previously a sergeant was doing paperwork while sitting in a parking lot near McDowell Road and 58th Avenue when a man walked up. The sergeant rolled down the window to see if the man needed help.

Martos said an altercation followed, during which the man reached into the car and the officer fired his gun.
