TEMPE, Ariz. -- Authorities said a dog that mauled a baby in Tempe has been euthanized and also tested for rabies.

Tempe police said the 9-month-old girl suffered severe head injuries after being briefly left alone Tuesday.

The baby remained hospitalized in critical condition.

A spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said the 95-pound Akita named Bellah was euthanized Friday and sent to the state lab for rabies testing.

The test results should be known in a few days.

The baby's family asked that the 8-year-old dog be tested and euthanized.

The dog also was involved in an attack in which an 8-year-old girl suffered facial injuries in 2012.
