PHOENIX -- The Chandler Regional Medical Center is getting provisional status as a designated Level 1 trauma center.

State Health Services Director Will Humble said area residents have long said there's a need for a top-tier trauma center in Phoenix's southeastern suburbs.

Chandler Regional said its trauma designation comes as the hospital is adding 96 beds, expanding its emergency department and increasing its operating room capacity.

Elsewhere in the state, recently designated Level 4 trauma centers include hospitals in Payson, Prescott and Sun City West.
