MESA, Ariz. — Mesa police say the body of an 11-year-old boy who went missing from his home has been found in a canal.

Lt. Ed Wessing says the boy, who had Down syndrome, was reported missing around 9:30 a.m. Saturday after family members discovered their dog clawing his way out of the canal.

Mesa police and Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies initiated a search on the air and ground around the property near Ray and Power roads.

Wessing says rescue divers with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office located the body about four hours later.

Wessing says it appears the boy followed the family dog from the property, which borders the canal, and likely fell in.
