Navajo lawmaker's bill opposes name of NFL team
Joshua Lavar Butler has introduced legislation in the Tribal Council to oppose the name he sees as racist. He says the use of the word can have a negative psychological effect on American Indians.
Not everyone in Indian Country agrees on the topic. The mascot for at least one high school on the Navajo Nation is the Redskins.
Butler's legislation is open for public comment until it becomes available for committee assignment Wednesday.
Under the bill, the council also would oppose what Butler says are disparaging references to American Indians in other professional sports franchises.
