Suburban Phoenix teacher sentenced to probation in sex case
PHOENIX -- A Gilbert charter school teacher has been sentenced to lifetime probation with sex-offender terms for having a sexual relationship with a teenage student.
Maricopa County prosecutors said 29-year-old Andrew James Teaters was sentenced Thursday on a child abuse charge.
Teaters was arrested last June at his Mesa home by Gilbert police. He was booked into jail on suspicion of three felony counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one felony count of sexual abuse.
Teaters was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old girl in his classroom at Gilbert Early College in April 2013.
The sixth-grade teacher told police he knew the girl was a minor.
According to a police report, Teaters and the girl told authorities that the one-time sexual relationship was consensual.
