58,000 Arizonans picked plans on health exchange

PHOENIX -- The federal government says nearly 58,000 Arizonans have picked insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act's health care exchange in the first five months of open enrollment.

The figures are below the number of people projected by this time but show continued growth in signups ahead of a March 31 deadline. That's when open enrollment for the year ends and people will be locked out until next January.

The figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show enrollments as of March 1.

More than 4.2 million people have signed up nationally.

Arizona was projected to have signed up about 84,000 people by this time.

Federal records show another 67,000 people were determined to be eligible for Arizona's Medicaid plan for the poor.
