TUCSON, Ariz. -- Renovations are set to begin this week on the Tucson Convention Center arena.

Work on the $7.8 million remodel will start Monday and include upgrading restrooms, remodeling concession stands, improving lighting and sound systems and putting in seats with cup holders.

Tucson city officials say scheduled events will not be disrupted.

They say the renovations are projected to be finished by December.

The seating capacity is expected to stay the same.

The arena's upgrades are being financed by the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District, which was approved by the Rio Nuevo Board last June.

Tucson's mayor and city council approved $544,000 in infrastructure improvements in February.

The city has already shelled out more than $17 million in the last year for repairs to carpets, elevators and sidewalks.
