FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A Flagstaff man is recovering this week after shooting himself in the foot and then crashing his car.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports emergency responders had to cut down a tree in order to remove the man from his vehicle Tuesday.

According to Flagstaff police, the man, whose identity wasn't released, had just left a gun store when he noticed his Heckler & Koch pistol was cocked.

The man told investigators the gun went off when he tried to uncock it while driving.

Police say the man attempted to drive himself to the hospital but blacked out from the blood loss.

They say his car went off the road and smashed into a tree in front of a hospice facility.

Police have not filed any charges.
