PHOENIX -- Phoenix police arrested a north Phoenix middle school teacher on suspicion of a sex crime with a former student.

According to police, 61-year-old James Giannopoulos was arrested after an investigation that began Tuesday, when another teacher at Centennial Middle School reported seeing Giannopoulos inappropriately close to a student.

Authorities said Giannopoulos and a former student allegedly exchanged hundreds of text messages in which sexual conduct was solicited and offered. Police wouldn't give the child's age.

Giannopoulos was placed on administrative leave from his job.
