PHOENIX -- Sentencing was postponed Friday for a Tempe man convicted in February of murder and assault in the 2010 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend.
Wade Bradford, 53, was charged with killing Natalie Allan when she came to his home with her new boyfriend to collect her belongings.
Bradford claimed her shooting death was an accident. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
Bradford also is charged in the 2006 death of a previous girlfriend whose body was found in 2011.
The two cases are being tried separately. Jurors in the 2010 case were not made aware of the other charges after a judge found it could prejudice the panel, given that the two killings are not connected.
Prosecutors want Bradford's sentencing for his February conviction delayed until after his trial in the 2006 killing.
Bradford, who plans to represent himself in that trial set for Oct. 15, told the judge Friday he hadn't decided yet whether to contest the prosecution's request for a sentencing postponement.
A hearing is set for April 18.
Meanwhile, Judge Scott McCoy tried to persuade Bradford to allow an attorney to represent him at his next trial.
``It's a bad decision because it's so hard to represent yourself, particularly when you're in jail,'' McCoy told Bradford. ``You don't have the training. You don't have the experience doing it.''
Bradford seemed undeterred, citing case law and complaining that he had not been provided with motions filed by prosecutors.
According to authorities, Allan separated from Bradford after meeting another man, Kevin Myles, and in May 2010 she went to Bradford's Tempe condo to collect her belongings. As Myles and Allan were inside Bradford's garage, Myles said Bradford arrived, suddenly pulled out a gun and shot Allan in the back of the head, then threatened him at gunpoint.
Bradford's attorneys argued that Myles charged at him and the gun accidentally fired, striking Allan.
Separately, Bradford is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Eleanor Su, 39, who disappeared in 2006. Her body wasn't discovered until 2011, after Bradford was jailed in the Allan shooting. Authorities say Su's body was found in an abandoned storage unit that had been rented to Bradford.
When Su disappeared, Bradford told authorities she had left him. He denies involvement in her killing.
