BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- Authorities said a corrections officer has been assaulted by an inmate at the state prison in Buckeye and the facility has been locked down.
Arizona Department of Corrections officials said an officer at the minimum security Eagle Point Unit of the Lewis complex was walking through a common area of the unit about 7 a.m. Thursday.
They said the inmate apparently used a small, weighted bag to strike the officer several times.
The officer was able to get away and call for help.
Prison staff locked down the unit and DOC officials said the inmate is being held for questioning.
DOC officials said the officer was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries to the head and face.
In January, another inmate at the Lewis complex assaulted a corrections officer before being restrained.
In February, the prison went into lockdown after a brawl among several inmates.
