Arizona Senate panel kills bills on federal law efforts

PHOENIX -- Arizona Senate bills requiring federal agents to register with a local sheriff and barring federal officials from making arrests without the sheriff's permission have essentially been killed over constitutional concerns.

The Senate Rules Committee voted 4-2 Monday to reject the bills after the committee's attorney said they likely ran afoul of the supremacy clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Senate Bill 1093 by Republican Sen. Chester Crandell of Heber would require federal agents to register with the local sheriff, show a warrant and hand over any fines they collect.

Senate Bill 1290 by Sen. Judy Burges of Sun City West made the sheriff the senior law enforcement officer in a county and allows that person to refuse to give federal agents permission to makes arrests or searches.
