PHOENIX -- Homeowners in west Phoenix found a wandering boy in their backyard early Saturday morning.

Phoenix officers responded to a call about the discovered child around 8:30 a.m. near 5700 W. Glenrosa Ave. The boy, estimated to be 2 years old, was wearing a red, long-sleeved T-shirt, black sweatpants and white socks, according to Phoenix Sgt. Trent Crump.

Late Saturday afternoon, Crump said the boy had been identified and his mother had been located and arrested. The mother reportedly was at a party in the area and told officers she does not remember what she did with the child Friday night.

Crump added that the mother is being transported to a Phoenix police facility for questioning, and he believes she will be booked Saturday night.

Police said the child appeared to be uninjured after he was checked by paramedics in the morning. Crump said the Native American boy was not communicating with patrol officers or CPS.

The sergeant added that the home where the child was found is surrounded by fencing and that it is unknown how he got inside. It had been raining in the area off and on since around midnight, but Crump reported the boy was "in relatively good condition."
