Hearings set for public comments on Arizona judges

PHOENIX -- A state commission has scheduled hearings for the public to comment on dozens of Arizona judges who will face retention elections this fall.

The Commission on Judicial Performance Review's hearings will be held March 3 in Tucson and March 7 and March 21 in Florence. The commission uses the public comments along with survey data to rate the judges' performance in office.

The judges up for retention election in November include two state Supreme Court justices and six Court of Appeals judges. The commission also will rate numerous Superior Court judges in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties.

All those judges are initially appointed to office, unlike Superior Court judges in Arizona's 12 less populous counties. They're elected unless they are initially appointed to fill midterm vacancies.
