FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A Flagstaff man has been arrested in connection with the death of his mother.

Flagstaff police say 18-year-old Zachariah E. Pine is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Officers responded Thursday night to a report of a woman who wasn't breathing at a Flagstaff home.

Police say 52-year-old Becky L. Pickering was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center, where she died Friday.

They say the cause and manner of death still are under investigation, but it appears Pickering suffered fatal injuries from a strangulation-type assault.

Police say Pine is Pickering's adopted son.

They say Pine originally was accused of aggravated assault in the case and the charges were amended after his mother died.

Authorities didn't immediately know Friday afternoon if Pine has an attorney yet.
