PHOENIX — The competitive level may have been high Friday when Arizona State University beat rival University of Arizona in basketball, but that didn’t stop fans from both teams reducing landfill waste, ASU said in a press release.
While the 10,754 fans in attendance generated more than 1,500 total pounds of garbage, just 196.8 pounds was sent to a landfill. The remaining 87.4 percent was either recycled or composted.
The school said most of the products sold at Wells Fargo Arena are either recyclable or compostable.
ASU is working to become a zero-waste school, meaning 90 percent of its total garbage is sent somewhere other than a landfill.
