PHOENIX -- A man was killed Wednesday morning in a drive-by shooting in central Phoenix.

The 54-year-old Alan Stewart and a woman were standing outside an apartment complex at 18th and Adams streets around 2 a.m. when the shooting happened.

Phoenix Police said six to 10 shots were fired by someone witnesses said was driving a dark SUV. Sgt. Michael Combs said the woman wasn't harmed but Stewart collapsed and said he had been shot.

Some of the bullets hit the outside walls of the apartments. No one inside was hurt.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
