Man gets prison for attempted assault in suburban Phoenix
PHOENIX -- A homeless man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for breaking into a Chandler home and attempting to sexually assault a sleeping woman.
Maricopa County prosecutors said 20-year-old Francisco Antonio Moreno also was sentenced Friday to lifetime probation and must register as a sex offender.
At a change of plea hearing in December, Moreno pleaded guilty to kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and armed robbery.
Moreno was arrested in the case last June.
Chandler police said the victim was awakened by a man she didn't know who was pulling down her pants.
She said the the man grabbed a hatchet that he had placed on a nightstand near the bed as the victim grabbed her cellphone.
They struggled over the phone and the victim's left wrist was cut by the hatchet.
