PHOENIX -- A Phoenix hospital is getting a $1 million grant to study falls among patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.
The Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital has been awarded the funds by the Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation.
The grant will go toward a medical center specifically dedicated to analyzing neurological triggers in falls. It will also enable Barrow to hire more doctors and nurses and purchase equipment.
The center, which will be called the Parsons Fall Research & Prevention Center, will open this month inside Barrow's Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.
Hospital officials said they treat 5,000 patients a year for fall-related injuries and a third of those patients are at risk for falling again.
