SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- An aircraft hangar in Arizona now bears the name of Medal of Honor recipient and South Dakota native Joe Foss.

The hangar is at Yuma International Airport in Yuma, Ariz. The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol says the hangar is within the Aviation Industrial Center, which is expected to play a role in the development of new technologies for the aerospace industry.

Foss graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1940. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and received the Medal of Honor in 1943 for his actions in the Guadalcanal Campaign fought during World War II.

Foss became South Dakota's 20th governor in 1955. He later headed the National Rifle Association and was a commissioner of the American Football League.

He died in 2003.
