PHOENIX -- A fatal accident involving a wrong-way driver closed a section of northbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix's northern outskirts.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. Monday near Anthem Way when a southbound SUV collided with a tractor-trailer rig in the northbound lanes.

The semi carrying produce caught fire but the driver and a passenger got out safely. However, the state Department of Public Safety said the 35-year-old Anthem man driving the SUV was killed.

Northbound lanes of I-17 between Daisy Mountain Drive and Anthem Way were shut down for over four hours. They reopened around 7:30 a.m.
