Woman gets one year for 9/11 bomb threat at Tucson airport

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -- A New York woman who phoned in a false bomb threat to an Arizona airport on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th terror attacks has been sentenced to one year in prison.

U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert handed down the prison term Friday in federal court on Long Island. Mary Purcell pleaded guilty to calling the Tucson airport last year.

Prosecutors have said she called in the false threat because her mother and brother were scheduled to take a Southwest Airlines flight that day and she feared for their safety.

The 39-year-old Long Island woman's lawyer declined to comment to Newsday.

Prosecutors say that after the call, bomb squad officers searched luggage for explosives and searched a plane with police dogs. No bomb was found.
