PHOENIX — Police have taken the final suspect in a New Year’s Eve police chase that ended with the shooting of a Phoenix officer and a sheriff’s posse member.
William Herbert Mayes was arrested in New York last month and was finally returned to Phoenix in connection with an armed robbery attempt. Officer Scott Sefranka and Phillip Grigg were shot during a struggle with one of the suspects, Roger Allen Sharp, who was charged with attempted murder.
Mayes and three others are suspected of trying to rob a club near 44th Street and Thomas Road. They led police on a car chase the ended several blocks away in a Scottsdale drugstore parking lot.
