AGUILA, Ariz. -- Two people is in custody after authorities seized four horses from a home in Aguila, 25 miles west of Wickenburg.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials said 27-year-old Jason Valenzuela was arrested last week and charged with seven counts of animal cruelty. His mother, 51-year-old Marla Corinne Valenzuela, was arrested Wednesday.

Animal crimes detectives served a search warrant at the Valenzuelas' home last week and determined that four horses were in dire need of food and medical attention.

Sheriff's officials first checked on Valenzuela's horses in August after receiving a tip and said they were worse off than before during a Jan. 31 check.
