PHOENIX -- A Maricopa County Sheriff's detention officer has been fired after hanging from a pipe at the downtown Phoenix jail in December, causing it to break and flood the complex.
Sheriff's officials tell KNXV-TV that the initial damage estimate is near $250,000 but could go higher as some areas of the jail still are being repaired.
MCSO officials say Terry Wheeler was fired Jan. 27 after being with the department for less than a year.
They say the incident occurred on the third floor within the jail's control tower. The water leaked down two floors to the central intake area.
Several computer systems, visitor systems, TV and other electronic components were damaged but officials say all systems related to inmate and employee protection and security were quickly repaired.
