FLORENCE, Ariz. -- Authorities said a state prison employee has been been assaulted by an inmate in Florence and the prison was locked down.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials said the assault happened Thursday morning at the Meadows Unit of the Eyman complex. The injuries appeared to be serious, but not life-threatening.

Officials said prison staff responded to the location and restrained and secured the inmate. The employee has been taken to an off-site medical facility for treatment and evaluation.

The name of the inmate and the injured prison employee weren't immediately released.

DOC officials said a criminal investigation is underway and the department will pursue appropriate criminal charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

Last week, a prison in Buckeye, Ariz., was locked down after an inmate assaulted a corrections worker.
