PHOENIX -- A man is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Phoenix.

Phoenix police said 21-year-old Darren Darnelle Hanson called police about 35 minutes after Tuesday night's accident and turned himself in.

Hanson is being held on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal collision.

Police said 35-year-old Matthew James Helmick was crossing Maryland and 23rd avenues about 7 p.m. when he was struck by the car. Helmick died at a hospital.

The case still is under investigation.
