Arizona man gets prison for assault on tribal officer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An Arizona man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for assaulting a law enforcement officer on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico.

Prosecutors say 24-year-old Donovan Eric Williams received a 46-month term followed by three years of supervised release.

Williams, of Whippoorwill, Ariz., was arrested in April 2013 and pleaded guilty in October.

A criminal complaint charged him with assaulting a sergeant with the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety.

Authorities say Williams deliberately veered his vehicle into her police car during a chase on March 21, 2013, near Church Rock, N.M.

They say Williams admitted intentionally striking the federal officer's vehicle even though she had pulled her marked police vehicle off to the side of the road to avoid a collision.
