PHOENIX -- A suspect accused of fatally shooting a man multiple times and burning the body in the desert near Tonopah is in custody.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say 24-year-old Donald Wayne Purcell was extradited Tuesday from California, where he was recently arrested near Bakersfield.

Purcell had his initial court appearance Wednesday. He was ordered held without bail on suspicion of one count of first-degree murder, one count of kidnapping and seven counts of misconduct involving weapons.

Purcell doesn't have a lawyer yet. His arraignment is Jan. 21.

Sheriff's deputies on Dec. 22 found the body of 25-year-old Abel Dominic Martinez with five gunshot wounds.

The medical examiner determined Martinez died before his body was burned. He was identified from a palm print.

Purcell reportedly fled Arizona by bus around Jan. 3.
