NEW YORK -- The Academy of American Poets has chosen Arizona's poet laureate and a prominent translator as the latest members of its board of chancellors.
Arizona poet laureate Alberto Rios, a regents professor at Arizona State University, and prize-winning poet-translator Khaled Mattawa have been elected to serve six-year terms on the academy's 15-member board. Previous chancellors include W.H. Auden, Marianne Moore and John Ashbery.
Founded 80 years ago, the academy is a nonprofit organization that publishes a biannual literary journal and sponsors numerous readings and other events.
Rios, the state's first poet laureate was appointed by Gov. Jan Brewer in August.
