MARICOPA, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old Pinal County girl is recovering after falling through a damaged septic tank lid and nearly drowning.
KTVK-TV reports the girl was walking with her mother Saturday morning on West Papago Road, near the city of Maricopa, when she stepped on the lid.
Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney says the tank's plastic cover had apparently collapsed under the girl's footing.
Gaffney says the girl fell into the tank but her mother was able to get her out.
"From our crews on scene that were able to look in the tank, and they said it was completely full," Brad Pitassi of the Maricopa Fire Department told KTAR. "One of the bystanders..the gentleman who actually jumped in was swimming in it…trying to find the little baby girl."
Authorities say emergency responders arrived at the scene and administered CPR.
Gaffney says she was taken to Cardon's Children Hospital and her condition is unknown.
But Gaffney says she was crying when being transported.
