PHOENIX — A park in Mesa will be dedicated Saturday to the memory of a Phoenix police officer killed in the line of duty.
Officer Shane Figueroa, who grew up in Mesa, was killed in 2008. The park, at Signal Butte and Ray roads, will be called Figueroa Green. Members of the Figueroa family are expected to attend the ceremony.
Figueroa was in his patrol car when he was hit by a drunk driver near 19th Avenue and Roeser Road. The officer had been responding to reports of shots fired.
“We’re extremely appreciative of the efforts made by the Mesa City Council and DMB (the home developer),” said Phoenix Sgt. Steve Martos.
