Phoenix Fire Department honored with PETA award

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Fire Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award, the organization announced Thursday.

The PFD earned the award based on its response to a fire at a condominium near 12th Street and Maryland Avenue on Jan. 5.

While the owners of the condominium were not home at the time, six pets -- four dogs and two cats -- were trapped inside the residence. Officials not only rescued all six animals but revived them with special oxygen masks.

"Phoenix's firefighters are truly heroes, because they don't consider their job done until all residents -- both human and non-human -- have made it to safety," PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch said in a statement. "PETA hopes the compassion and know-how shown by these first responders will inspire others to come to aid of animals in need."
