TUCSON, Ariz. -- Authorities say they now have a suspect in the killings of two people who were deliberately run over in Tucson on New Year's Day.

Tucson police announced Thursday that they're searching for 28-year-old Michael D. Leday, who may have known one of the victims.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Leday in the case.

Police say 32-year-old Patrick Balbastro and his girlfriend stopped their car in a neighborhood to help 46-year-old Cindy Burnett, who was being assaulted by a man.

The fight escalated and police say the attacker got into Balbastro's car and repeatedly ran over the three people.

Balbastro was fatally injured and Burnett died at the scene. Balbastro's girlfriend remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The attacker drove off and later abandoned Balbastro's car after hitting a tree.
