Trial begins in Sierra Vista homicide-assault case
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- Trial has begun in Bisbee for a 19-year-old suspect accused of killing a Sierra Vista man and sexually assaulting the victim's wife in 2011.
In opening statements Wednesday in Cochise County Superior Court, prosecutors say they will likely focus on Theodore Ramos' sanity at the time of the incident.
Ramos has pleaded guilty but insane.
The Sierra Vista Herald reports that Ramos is accused of using a kitchen knife to slit the throat of the 76-year-old man and then sexually assault the man's 72-year-old wife.
Ramos allegedly rang the doorbell of the victims' home about 3 a.m. on July 24, 2011.
He told the couple that some men were after him and then pushed the door open and allegedly attacked the husband and then the wife.
