SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- Authorities say a 49-year-old man has been shot and killed by a Sierra Vista police officer during an altercation.

KGUN-TV reports that Sierra Vista police spokesman Scott Borgstadt said 49-year-old Michael Estrada was shot earlier Saturday morning following a 911 call.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the site of the call and found a man in the front yard.

Officials said that's when Estrada began making aggressive statements and started walking toward one of the officers.

Borgstadt said officer Michael Rathmann then shot at Estrada a number of times. The suspect later died at a nearby hospital.

Rathmann, a 13-year veteran of the Sierra Vista Police Department, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
