PHOENIX -- Authorities have suspended the search for a 22-year-old man who has been reported missing for more than a week in the mountains of northern Arizona.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said Friday the search was suspended after a fifth day of searching roughly 30 square miles of thick scrub, deep canyons and caves. Temperatures have dipped into the 20s in recent nights.

Thomas Lang was last seen Dec. 18 at the Manzanita Campground in Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona.

Authorities said Lang went into the woods for a planned five-day hike without a cellphone or any food because he was fasting.

About 60 searchers scoured the area Thursday along with a dog team and a helicopter. Experts trained to navigate the deep canyons also were brought in from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
