PHOENIX -- Authorities say two brothers have been arrested for allegedly participating in cockfights in south Phoenix.

Phoenix police said 24-year-old Jesus Israel Avalos and 20-year-old Ademir Guzman Avalos were booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of three counts of cruelty to animals.

According to documents filed in South Mountain Justice of the Peace court, the brothers were seen Wednesday cleaning up feathers and blood and dismantling a plywood ring in a backyard with multiple chicken coops.

The two told police that they raise chickens for sale in Mexico, where the birds fetch up to $200 apiece.

Police said it's been determined that at least three cockfights occurred in the yard of the home on Christmas Day.

It was unclear Thursday if either of the Avalos brothers have an attorney.
