TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Tucson teacher has been fired after district officials say he took time off to care for a sick relative but was really teaching in another school district.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Tucson Unified School District Governing Board approved sending a notice of intent to terminate to Angel G. Vidal, a teacher at Roskruge Middle Magnet School.

Officials say Vidal initiated a request for family medical leave for the entire school year to care for his ill mother, saying he would "provide daily living assistance" and to give his sister some "much needed rest."

But last month, the district's Human Resources department discovered that Vidal was under contract with the Douglas Unified School District and was actively teaching.

Vidal was given an opportunity to resign in October, but did not accept the offer.
