UA surgeon seeks Dem Tucson legislative seat

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A University of Arizona trauma surgeon who treated victims of the Tucson mass shooting that wounded then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is running for a seat in the Arizona Legislature.

Dr. Randall Friese announced his candidacy in Legislative District 9 this week. He's running as a Democrat in a district that currently splits its two House members between the major parties.

Friese operated on Giffords and other victims of the January 2011 shooting rampage that left Giffords with brain damage and ended her political career. He said he will focus on education and gun control issues.

Republican Rep. Ethan Orr says Friese is challenging him.

Orr said he plans to focus on his own accomplishments, which include joining with Democrats to support Gov. Jan Brewer's push to expand the state's Medicaid program.
