Arizona officials to announce no-burn campaign
PHOENIX -- Maricopa County and state officials are set to kick off the "Don't Burn Wood on No Burn Days" campaign aimed at protecting public health and keeping in compliance with federal air quality standards.
The Maricopa County Air Quality Department and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality are set to make the announcement Thursday.
Officials said smoke from wood-burning fireplaces and outdoor burning poses serious health risks to the elderly, children with asthma and others with respiratory illnesses.
Maricopa County also risked falling out of compliance with federal health standards for air pollution limits. If the county doesn't comply with the standards, it may face costly federal regulations.
