PHOENIX — Dozens of Catholics attended a special ceremony and mass at Saint Mary’s Basilica in downtown Phoenix Monday to kick off a centennial celebration.
The mass was officiated by the Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, bishop of Phoenix.
“This was the center of Phoenix life when the church was established in 1915,” he said. “As the town grew, so did the parish. From here, many things came. The first St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary’s Food Bank. As many people, St. Joseph Hospital was established by an order of nuns who were here to teach and heal.”
The parish will host a series of events to honor the centennial.
