Asarco celebrates expansion of Mission Mine mill
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Copper giant Asarco is celebrating the dedication of a $60 million expansion of one of its mills at the Mission Mine in southern Arizona.
Contractors, employees and other dignitaries attended Wednesday's ceremony at the Mission complex south of Tucson.
Company officials say expansion of the South Mill has added 9,000 tons more per day of additional crushing and milling capacity, bringing the total of the complex's two mills to 58,000 tons of ore per day.
The concentrate produced at the Mission Mine feeds the company's smelter in Hayden.
The expansion has also created 30 new jobs, bringing the workforce at the Mission site to 660 people.
As part of the expansion's permitting, the company says Pima County approved new controls that are designed to reduce overall emissions.
