Trial set for teen charged in MCSO employee's death
PHOENIX -- A June 5 trial has been set for a 15-year-old boy accused of killing a Maricopa County jail officer who was shot in his own driveway.
The boy has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and drive-by-shooting in the Aug. 8 death of 27-year-old detention officer Jorge Vargas.
Authorities believed Vargas was chosen at random when he was attacked while working on his car at his West Valley home. He was wearing his uniform.
Investigators don't know what exactly happened in the driveway near 89th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road before Vargas was shot.
The Associated Press is not naming the 15-year-old because of his age.
Vargas was an eight-year veteran.
