Arizona health officials updating regulations on abortion clinics

PHOENIX -- Arizona health officials are drafting new rules on regulation of abortion clinics as required under a wide-ranging 2012 state law.

The rule changes include requiring that a physician with hospital admitting privileges be present at a clinic while women undergo medication or surgical abortions and until they're ready to leave the recovery room.

There also are requirements for follow-up care for women who undergo medication or surgical abortions.

The department has released a draft of the rules for public comment, and Director Will Humble said he expected the final version to be approved by early summer.

A federal court has blocked enforcement of a separate provision in the 2012 law to generally prohibit abortions of fetuses with probable gestational ages of 20 or more weeks.
