PHOENIX -- A 44-year-old man is dead following an early morning fire at his north Phoenix home.

Authorities say they responded to Carl Zeman's home along E. Bramble Berry Lane around 6:20 a.m. Saturday. The flames had already taken over the garage.

Firefighters searched the home and found Zeman and a dog inside. Zeman was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

While firefighters were rescuing the victim, sections of the roof began to collapse. Crews took a defensive position and no injuries were reported.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson says there are no initial signs that indicate any criminal activity related to the man's death.

Investigators with the fire department are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
